There are two very different kinds of beaches on Cozumel. One type, found on the west coast of the island facing the Yucatan Peninsula, offers stretches of golden sand. On the east side facing the Caribbean Sea, quiet beaches alternate with rocky shores and expanses of the solitary coast. The waters on the west side are generally calm, while the roaring surf on the east creates perilous breakers and undertows. Look for seaside restaurants on the east coast; they often offer all the vast amenities of a beach club. The best way to enjoy the beaches is by renting a car and cruising the island.
Lifeguards are basically non-existent in Cozumel so enjoy the beaches at your own risk. Always check the Beach Flags for current beach conditions.
